PETA's youth division, peta2, is giving props to celebs like Justin Bieber, Ke$ha and "Glee" star Lea Michele at this year's Libby Awards for their efforts in support of animal rights. The Biebs, who appeared in a campaign for the organization at the top of the year using Bieber-fied catch-phrases like "My world includes passion for animals, yours should too" and "Animals can make u smile. Adopt from your local shelter," is taking on fellow animal-loving pop star Ke$ha and rappers k-os and Waka Flocka Flame in the Most Animal-Friendly Pop/Hip-Hop Artist category. Ke$ha appeared in an ad campaigning against the slaughter of Canadian seals. Michele, who speaks out against the mistreatment of carriage horses in New York City, faces off against "Jackass" star Steve-O, Cobra Starship's leading man and peta2's Sexiest Vegetarian Gabe Saporta, and "Victorious" star Daniella Monet in the Top Animal-Friendly Celebrity category. The Ready Set, Tokio Hotel, Hellogoodbye and the Swellers are all up for Most Animal-Friendly Band. Ke$ha and Tokio are also up for Best peta2 ad along with Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness and Yelle. The Libby (as in "Liberation") Awards will be decided on January 17 by fan votes as well as peta2. Voting ends December 23. "Our nominees have all worked hard to shine their spotlights on a variety of important animal issues," peta2 Division Manager Marta Holmberg said about the nominees, which honors animal-friendly people and products. "As our accomplished stars demonstrate, compassion isn't just a virtue — it's also a road to success."

'X Factor' Michael Jackson Night Has Singers On Edge

Meanwhile, Paula Abdul has been absent from the set since her final group was eliminated last week.
By Jim Cantiello

MTV News' own Jim Cantiello is exclusively covering "The X Factor" rehearsals. Read on for his fly-on-the-wall backstage report!

LOS ANGELES — "The X Factor" top seven are back on the lot after their first (and only) mini-vacation of the season. And as the Thanksgiving tryptophan wears off, the anxiety of another double elimination is setting in.

Adding to the stress? "The X Factor" is tackling the songs of Michael Jackson on Wednesday night (November 30), on the 29th anniversary of Thriller's release, no less.

One of the contestants is so stressed over the theme he's emerged as a total perfectionist. During Monday's rehearsals, he had already nixed multiple arrangements the show had provided him. "This is the most unprepared I've felt on a Monday," he said to his mentor as they rushed out of Stage 36. There was a camera crew chasing them to capture the drama — as well as the ensuing late-night emergency meeting with the vocal coaches — so don't be surprised if some of this intense footage ends up in your living room. (This afternoon's dress rehearsal went swimmingly, for the record.)

Meanwhile, one contestant had a full-on battle with his/her mentor over a chair. The mentor said, "Sit and sing." The contestant said, "Again?! How about I do something on my feet for Michael Jackson week?" Another mentor came to the defense of the contestant. In the end, the contestant is sitting after all. Don't worry, contestant. The eerie arrangement of an MJ classic is what folks are going to be buzzing about. No one will care if you sit or stand. In the control room, I spied one of the bigwigs utter the word "brilliant!" after the contestant's dress rehearsal.

Another hot topic: wardrobe! When paying homage to one of the biggest music icons ever, it's tempting for the stylists to include clothing nods to Michael's various looks. But several singers are worried they'll look too much like Jackson impersonators, which has caused many a headache in the wardrobe trailer. But stylist June Ambrose is still able to keep things light in the midst of the drama. While waiting around for a contestant's last-minute fitting, she started an impromptu MJ dance party on the lot. Crotch grabs and "woo" included!

Lastly, Paula Abdul's sunny energy has been noticeably absent on the CBS lot now that all her groups have been eliminated. She went from being the most hands-on mentor to an on-set ghost. "The X Factor" family can't wait to welcome her back for her first live show as strictly a judge. What do you think she's been doing with her newfound free time?

You can catch Jim on the "X Factor Pepsi Pre-Show," streaming at 7 p.m. ET tonight on TheXFactorUSA.com!

Bikini Beauty Maria Menounos' Christmas Pool Party

She wasn't able to enjoy a traditional white Christmas, but Maria Menounos certainly made the most with what the weather had to offer.

The 33-year-old beauty tossed on a black bikini as she joined friends and family in hopping in the backyard pool while soaking up the west coast sunshine.

Posting a picture from the festivities, Miss Menounos happily wrote, "Its a california xmas here...parents and friends swimming!!"

Looking fabulous in the waterbound shot, Maria recently spoke about how she places a great deal of emphasis on maintaining her skin.

Revealing her regular beauty process, Menounos dished, "My evening ritual consists of using Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelette and then using my cleanser and I have little white towels folded up in my bathroom like a hotel and I use each one only once before I throw it in the laundry bin."

Michael Jackson's Family Not Out For 'Revenge'

'There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back,' Joe and Katherine Jackson say in a statement read at Conrad Murray hearing.
By Andrea Duncan-Mao, with reporting by Gil Kaufman

Katherine Jackson arrives for the sentencing of Dr. Conrad Murray at the Los Angeles Superior Court on November 29, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Murray was convicted on November 7 for the 2009 death of Jackson from an overdose of the powerful anesthetic propofol and faces up to four years in state prison. (Photo by )

At Tuesday's (November 29) sentencing hearing for Dr. Conrad Murray — where Michael Jackson's former personal physician received four years in jail for involuntary manslaughter — a statement from Jackson's parents was read in court.

"We still look at each other in disbelief: Is it really possible he is gone? It is simply against the natural order of things," Joe and Katherine Jackson said in the statement, read by Jackson family attorney Brian Panish. "We are not here to seek revenge. There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back."

Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook.

Along with Katherine, Michael's siblings LaToya, Jermaine, Randy and Rebbie were also reportedly in attendance at the hearing.

In regards to the sentence, the family said in the statement: "We respectfully request you impose a sentence that reminds physicians they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder."

The judge agreed, lamenting that due to a new California law to address overcrowding in prisons, he was unable to sentence Murray to state prison. Stating that Murray practiced "horrible medicine" and had "absolutely no remorse," Judge Michael Pastor declined the defense's motion for probation and handed down the stiffest sentence possible — four years — which Murray will most likely serve in a Los Angeles county jail or on home confinement.

Upon leaving the courthouse, Michael's brother Jermaine, when asked if the four-year sentence was enough, shook his head and said, "No." Katherine told local TV station KTLA, "Four years is not enough for someone's life. It won't bring him back. But at least he got the maximum, and I thought the judge was very, very fair."

No hay más Led Zeppelin

By

Photo:

¿Y a ti? ¿Qué te parece todo esto?

Heidi Klum's Snowy Aspen Family Getaway

Getting in some time away from her typical California living, Heidi Klum was spotted enjoying the snow in Aspen, CO on Monday (December 26).

The “Project Runway” mama pulled her bundled up daughter Lou in a tiny red sled as husband Seal watched the other kiddos hit the slopes.

Yesterday, on Christmas Day, Klum and her family spent some time sledding on the slopes with Heidi barreling down on a sled of her own.

The always-cheerful model laid on her back and as she slid down the snow-covered hill yelled “Merry Christmas Everyone!” as her musician hubby recorded the ride.

Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga Top Google Zeitgeist Year-End Lists

Bieber named Google's Most Popular Person of 2011, while 'Born This Way' tops Fastest Rising Songs chart.
By James Montgomery

Let this serve as undeniable proof that, regardless of search engine, Justin Bieber truly dominates the Interwebs.

Having already been named Bing's

id="1675049">most-searched person of 2011, on Thursday (December 15) Bieber picked up another e-honor, as Google unveiled its annual Zeitgeist site and, in the process, declared him its Most Popular Person of the year, besting Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga to take home the title. Nicki Minaj and, uh, Casey Anthony rounded out the top 5.

It's a fitting way to cap off a year that saw Bieber beat Gaga in the race to 2 billion YouTube views, though perhaps the Mother Monster can take solace in the fact that "Born This Way" topped Google's Fastest-Rising Song search list, ahead of "Watch the Throne" (which, you know, isn't actually a song) and Blake Shelton's "Honey Bee."

Of course, not even Bieber could best Rebecca Black on Google's Fastest Rising Searches, as the "Friday" sensation topped the list — which tallied worldwide searches — ahead of Google Plus, Ryan Dunn, Casey Anthony and "Battlefield 3." Breakout star Adele also made huge headways this year, landing at #7 on the list and beating out Steve Jobs and the iPad 2.

Not surprisingly, Black also came in atop the Fastest-Rising People list, besting "American Idol" champ Scotty McCreery and teenage bride/ pumpkin-patch enthusiast Courtney Stodden.

But when it came to the year's most-searched images, well, neither Bieber nor Black made the cut. Instead, folks were seeking pics of Charlie Sheen above all else, followed by "Planking," "Kim Kardashian wedding" and a trio of hair-raising (or perhaps razing) queries: "Tom Brady Haircut," "Selena Gomez Haircut" and "Emma Watson Haircut."

Coldplay, Led Zeppelin Album Covers Featured On New British Stamps

Album art from Pink Floyd, Blur and David Bowie also included.
By James Montgomery

Photo: Royal Mail

On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.'s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.

The albums featured in the new series are the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, Led Zeppelin's IV, David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, The Clash's London Calling, New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies, Primal Scream's Screamadelica, Pink Floyd's The Division Bell, Blur's Parklife and — the most recent album on to make the cut — Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Meant to honor "the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people's lives," the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page — who helped design the cover for IV — was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album's iconic imagery.

"Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him," he said. "That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time."

Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their Rush of Blood stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan "a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today's issue date."

"We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps," the message read. "Very nice they are too."

Foster The People 'Experimenting' With Torches Follow-Up

Band broke through to the big time in 2011 with 'Pumped Up Kicks.'
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias

Foster the People's Mark Foster and Cubbie Fink
Photo: MTV News

Foster the People were one of 2011's biggest breakouts, first scoring a massive crossover hit with "Pumped Up Kicks," then nabbing a pair of Grammy nominations and finally, landing current single "Don't Stop (Color on the Walls)" in a high-profile ad campaign (and accompanying it with a really excellent video, starring Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe).

So, as the year comes to a close, we asked the guys in Foster to try and sum up the past 12 months, which saw them rocket from little-known L.A. rock outfit to internationally famous buzz band. And, as you can probably expect, for a band that's basically lived on the road in 2011, most of their milestones have to do with the size of the stages they've played on ... and the audiences they've played for.

"It's funny, in January we started a residency at the Echo, which is this club in L.A., and we played every week for about a month, and that kind of kicked it off. The first week, it was half full ... it only holds 300 people, I think there was like 125 people there," frontman Mark Foster laughed. "And then cut to four months later, doing Coachella in front of 15,000 people, and then cut to three months after that, playing Lollapalooza in front of 50,000 people. It's just been wild man, seeing the world and seeing the progression of things. ... It's crazy to think about. I feel like we have 10 years of memories packed into this one year."

While they'll continue to tour in earnest in 2012, most of the year will be dedicated to writing and recording the follow-up to their Torches debut. Not surprisingly, Foster said the band's new stuff has been heavily influenced by their time away from home.

"We've gotten to write some stuff on the road so far, but haven't really gotten to dive into it too much yet," he said. "We've just been kind of throwing everything against the wall, idea-wise, like, 'We should try this and we should try this,' all these different boundaries to work within, because sometimes it can be really daunting I think, if you don't have certain boundaries when writing a song.

"There's definitely musical elements that we've talked about — you know, really leaning on the percussive nature of what our live show has turned into this year, and bringing that more out into the second record — just kind of experimenting, doing some different, weird studio tricks; just having fun with it. But you never really know until you get under the hood, so we'll see what happens when we start."

Are you looking forward to the next FTP album? Tell us in the comments!

'X Factor' Crowns Melanie Amaro First US Winner

19-year-old from Florida receives a $5 million recording contract and a spot in a Pepsi commercial that will air during the Super Bowl.
By Adam Graham

From early reject to grand-prize winner, Melanie Amaro was crowned champion of Fox's "The X Factor" on Thursday (December 22), winning a $5 million recording contract and a spot in a Pepsi commercial that will air during next year's Super Bowl.

Amaro, a 19-year-old from Sunrise, Florida, beat out 30-year-old Columbus, Ohio, contestant Josh Krajcik for the title of "X Factor" winner. Chris Rene, the 28-year-old from Santa Cruz, California, came in third place.

When the results were read, an emotional Amaro exclaimed, "Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God!" She was swarmed by members of her family, and "X Factor" host Steve Jones struggled to get a word from her. After performing Beyoncé';'s "Listen," Amaro said, "God is good," and thanked her fans.

"Thank you so much, thank you. I'm just, I'm so happy and I don't know what to say," she said. "This is something I've wanted for all my life!"

Amaro's victory was especially sweet considering she was technically eliminated from the competition after Simon Cowell sent her home following one of the early rounds. Deciding he had made a mistake, Cowell paid a personal visit to her home and invited her to rejoin the competition.

In the end, Cowell was pleased with his decision, as well as America's choice of Amaro as its first "X Factor" winner. "We came here to find a superstar, we found a superstar. Thank you to everyone who supported the show," Cowell said. He called Krajcik "a worthy runner-up."

Krajcik, the husky, self-described burrito slinger, congratulated Amaro on her victory. "Melanie deserves it, she has a wonderful voice," he said. "I've had such an incredible experience here. I got to be myself and sing what I wanted to sing. I couldn't be happier."

Earlier in the show, third-place finisher Rene said he felt "amazing" for getting the chance to participate in the competition. "I got to touch a lot of people's hearts out there, and I just gotta say thank you," he said.

Rene's mentor in the competition, L.A. Reid, called Rene — a recovering substance abuser who celebrated his eighth month of sobriety earlier this week — a "gentleman" and a "talent." "This is how it turned out, it doesn't matter," Reid said. "This is my man."

"The X Factor" was one of the year's most anticipated shows. It debuted in September with lofty expectations, with Cowell — who abandoned his judging position at "American Idol" to bring "X Factor" to these shores — predicting the show would attract 20 million viewers per episode. Instead, it pulled about half that, averaging 11.1 viewers over the course of the season, and criticism from viewers who questioned the show's over-the-top production and the awkwardness of host Steve Jones.

Thursday's results show followed Wednesday's performance episode, when the three finalists performed duets with superstar acts: Amaro with R. Kelly, Krajcik with Alanis Morissette and Rene with Avril Lavigne. Following the show, Cowell heavily endorsed Amaro to be the winner.

Thursday's two-hour episode featured a host of musical acts. Justin Bieber performed on the show, dueting with surprise guest Stevie Wonder on "The Christmas Song" and later with "X Factor" finalist (and Biebs superfan) Drew Ryniewicz on "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." 50 Cent also appeared on the show, performing his new single "Wait Until Tonight," as well as his 2003 smash "In da Club" alongside Tony Yayo, "X Factor" rapper Astro and several members of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Pitbull, meanwhile, appeared and did a quickie version of his single "International Love" and was later joined by Ne-Yo and "X Factor" contestant Marcus Canty on "Give Me Everything."

A countdown of the show's top five most shocking moments rightfully named Rachel Crow's December 8th elimination as the season's biggest shocker, and Crow herself was brought out and joked about stealing host Jones' job. She introduced Leona Lewis, who covered Snow Patrol's "Run" over a package of the season's most memorable moments.

The top 12 finalists opened the show with a group performance of Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory." The top three contestants also performed holiday songs, with Amaro doing "All I Want for Christmas Is You," Rene crooning "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and Krajcik taking on the Eagles' "Please Come Home for Christmas."

Prior to the reading of the results, Amaro and Krajcik shared the stage together and performed David Bowie's "Heroes."

What did you think of the "X Factor" results? Let us know in the comments!

'Hobbit' Trailer Goes Back To Middle-earth

'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' teaser features Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett and other 'Lord of the Rings' characters.
By Kara Warner

What a week of 2012 movie trailers and teasers! We've had looks at "The Dark Knight Rises," "Wrath of the Titans," and now, the first official trailer for Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," part one of his two-film treatment of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved book.

The trailer opens with an elderly Bilbo (Ian Holm) explaining to Frodo (Elijah Wood) that he might not have shared all there was to know about his adventures, followed by a quick cut to young Bilbo (Martin Freeman) being recruited to come on a new journey with Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen). It then introduces a slew of Dwarves and Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), who begin an eerie foreshadowing chant that provides backing for quick clips of this new fellowship on their journey. After that, it shows brief glimpses of Cate Blanchett reprising her role as ethereal Galadriel and a shadowy appearance of Andy Serkis as Gollum muttering about his "precious."

While "The Hobbit" is a return to Tolkien's famous Middle-earth for Jackson, whose critically acclaimed "Lord of the Rings" trilogy won millions of fans around the world and 17 Oscars, this film has a slightly different tone and look to it.

"The Hobbit" takes place 60 years before the events that unfold in "The Fellowship of the Ring" and follows Bilbo Baggins' journey to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the treacherous dragon Smaug. Along the way, Bilbo and the brave warrior Thorin Oakenshield have run-ins with Goblins, Orcs, Wargs and giant spiders — and a chance meeting with Gollum that will change the course of Bilbo's life forever and leads to the discovery of the "one ring to rule them all."

Much to the delight of the "Lord of the Rings" dedicated fanbase, many of the actors from Jackson's first three films are reprising their roles: Andy Serkis is back as Gollum, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Hugo Weaving as Elrond and Christopher Lee as Saruman.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is set to arrive in theaters December 14, 2012.

Check out everything we've got on "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

Britney Spears 'Gets A Kick Out Of Fist Pumping,' Pauly D Says

'Jersey Shore' star teases his gig with Spears this weekend in Puerto Rico.

Pauly D has a lot of experience playing shows with Britney Spears. He not only opened for her in Las Vegas earlier this year during the taping of her "I Am the Femme Fatale" MTV special, but he later hit the road with Spears for her Femme Fatale tour.

So opening for the princess of pop as she wraps up her world tour this weekend won't be too difficult for the "Jersey Shore" star. He's slated to appear with her on December 10 in Puerto Rico. It's the very last stop on the months-long, sprawling trek around the globe.

Since Pauly last hit the road with pop's ultimate femme fatale, he told MTV News that he has been keeping in touch with his pal. "Yeah [we keep in contact], oh yeah, for sure," he said. "A lot of tweets."

While Pauly played it coy during our chat about the upcoming gig, he did give us just enough hints to let us know that the show is indeed all set for Saturday. "There's rumors; rumors have it that I might be on that tour," he joked. "I'm not sure. I'd love to. I hope so. I like Puerto Rico and it's nice this time of year."

Is there any chance that Britney might make an appearance on Pauly's in-the-works solo reality show while he's out there with her? "She's busy. She's really busy and I'd love to link up with her and get her on this 'cause doing her tour, that was another dream for me, to do an artist's tour. I've been a fan of Britney my whole life, so it's been great for me."

"She was happy for me," he continued. "She was like, 'Oh you're going to be fist pumping on the show.' She gets a kick out of the fist pumping."

If that appearance doesn't pan out, DJ Pauly D needn't worry too much. He just announced his deal with 50 Cent's G-Note Records, a step that should help to take his DJ career to the next level. 50 spoke to MTV News about the deal earlier this week, teasing some big things.

"Pauly's project is not all his performance on the actual records," Fif explained of the "hit record" he hopes to make with the DJ, set for release in 2012. "It's more like what you would get from a DJ Khaled or DJ Drama but also what you would get from David Guetta — so it's a cross between those two worlds, and I think it's exciting."

Fans of Pauly D are also pumped for the latest season of his hit MTV series "Jersey Shore." Just this week, a season 5 trailer dropped and there seems to be enough drama, GTL and smushing to go around for everyone.

"There was a lot of tension in [Italy], because we were away from our friends, away from our family, so all we had was each other — that's it," Pauly said. "So now we literally ran to Jersey, because we missed it so much, and we just shared that bond, because we've been there before, so we enjoyed it with everybody this year. It was really one of my best years, I think."

The fifth season of "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday, January 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. For continuing "Shore" coverage, be sure to check in with MTV's Remote Control blog.

'Prometheus' Trailer: Five Key Elements

Ridley Scott's teaser, featuring Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron fighting for their lives, is reminiscent of 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner.'

If you're a fan of movie trailers, consider your holiday wants and wishes fulfilled now that the teaser for Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" has dropped. It's the fourth trailer released this week for a hugely anticipated 2012 film, following "The Dark Knight Rises," "Wrath of the Titans" and "The Hobbit." Here's a look at five key elements that deserve MTV News' over-analysis:

Plot Tease
We still don't know a lot about the story line in this film, but this one-minute spot sheds a lot of light on what the action will center around: a team of explorers, scientists and anthropologists sets out on a journey to find clues to the origin of our species. "What they found could be our end," we're told in cold, blue type, before quick cuts of what looks to be death and destruction. And although the prequel rumors have been shot down by those involved, there is room here to interpret it as such. Not to mention the title: In Greek mythology, Prometheus is the titan who stole fire from Mt. Olympus and gave it to humans. If the humans in the film are searching for their origin, maybe it is Prometheus, in some way, shape or form.

Lost in Space/Discovery of Life on Other Planets
Unsurprisingly, there are several gorgeous shots of space vehicles, spaceships, spacesuits, etc. that help properly accentuate the size and scope of what it would be like to be up/out there, as well as how big this film really is. Director Ridley Scott shot the film in 3-D and serves up a few hints to the beautiful technology at play, though there is still a grittiness to it all. This is not friendly, bright and shiny unexplored territory; it's dark, dangerous, deep space. And then there are the scenes at the end of the trailer that look to take place on another planet, in another galaxy. There is dry, dusty terrain and ancient-looking symbols, a towering horseshoe-shaped totem of some sort, that looks to be either crumbling to the ground, or it is moving of its own accord, beginning a small war between the natives and the humans who've discovered them.

The New Ripley(s)
It's hard to talk about Ridley Scott and an "Alien"-esque movie without thinking about Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, one of the most bad-ass protagonists in film history. There's no replacing Ripley, but Scott has enlisted two very capable ladies to carry the torch: Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron. From what the trailer shows, both women will be fighting for their lives, but Rapace seems to be the most Ripley-esque, particularly in one shot where she is hanging upside down, being held by someone or something. The resemblance is uncanny. And let's not forget about the rest of the cast, of whom we get only brief glimpses: Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce and Rafe Spall.

That Ridley Scott Touch
The trailer is cold, calculated and just too cool. Just like Scott has said himself, if "Prometheus" isn't an "Alien" prequel, the two films definitely share the same DNA — not to mention a few "Blade Runner"-esque elements thrown in for good measure. And as is the case with most of Scott's films, the effects are far more practical than CG. The world of "Prometheus" is set in a distant future, but not too distant. It's big, bold and, very likely, terrifying.

The Alien(s)
As much as we might have hoped to see some big, bad aliens in this trailer, all we get are hints of an unidentified, menacing force out there. In one brief scene, the team happens upon an area full of small, perfectly arranged casings that could be artifacts or alien eggs, we don't know. But we do see one of the humans' helmets enveloped by a mysterious gas, followed by a loud, painful scream. There is a quick shot of the head of something being examined in a lab, what looks like it might be an alien ship of some sort hovering over dusty terrain, followed by brief shots of human suffering at the hands of something we can't quite make out. Yet.

"Prometheus" hits theaters June 8, 2012.
