Ed Westwick and Jessica Szohr's Awkward Knicks Night

Turning up to cheer on the hometown team in their Madison Square Garden season opener, Jessica Szohr and Ed Westwick were both on-hand for the NY Knicks/Portland Trailblazers game on Saturday night (October 30).

Making for quite the interesting situation, the "Gossip Girl" co-stars/former lovers chatted briefly with one another before parting ways to sit in separate sections of the arena.

Miss Szohr looked to be enjoying herself as she grabbed up a seat alongside her mystery date, also spending time chatting with fellow attendees Michael J.Fox and family.

Doing his best to ignore his former flame, Ed ended up sitting courtside as he downed a few beverages while watching the Knicks fall to the Trailblazers by a score of 100-95.

Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her 'Crazy' Led Zeppelin Covers

'I've listened to their music since I was a child,' says the R&B diva, who recorded 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love.'
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Larry Carroll

You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin.

In early February, reports began circulating that Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven," working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her Stronger With Each Tear album, due Monday.

But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering another Zeppelin classic — the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" — for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the Essence Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine.

"I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' — it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun."

Blige also said she recorded another new song — a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" — for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.

"I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.

Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.

Officially, Lollapalooza ended Sunday night in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from the Killers and Jane's Addiction. Unofficially, it ended very early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures.

To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of Foo Fighters frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere.

According to some reports, the Vultures actually turned down Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town.

Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures — Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar — ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called Never Deserved the Future, and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans).

The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard — Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" — delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Jim DeRogatis.

It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures — there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October.

Early Monday, a Crooked Vultures Twitter account, which had previously posted links to the band's official-looking Web site and the Metro's online ticketing site — posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a Deserve the Future T-shirt. Cost: $30.

Lady Gaga's Meat Dress Remade By NYC Steakhouse

Restaurant is asking a beefy $100,000 for its version of Gaga's VMA outfit.
By James Montgomery

You would have thought that, by now, coverage of Lady Gaga's VMA meat dress had reached its expiration date ... sort of like the 50 pounds of steak that designer Franc Fernandez originally used to make the garment.

But, you'd be wrong. You see, with Halloween right around the corner, one New York City eatery is making headlines with their last-minute costume suggestion: A re-creation of Gaga's VMA garb, in all its sirloin-y splendor. The only catch? You've got to have deep pockets to afford it.

Yes, for only $100,000, the owners of New York's Old Homestead Steakhouse — appropriately located, as the Daily News points out, in the Big Apple's Meatpacking District — will make you your very own meat dress, complete with rib-eye leggings, Kobe beef boots and a necklace made of marrow bones.

The dress weighs a hefty 85 pounds and was created by Old Homestead owner Marc Sherry in response to Gaga's VMA outfit, which he deemed "very tacky" since it was made out of meager bits of meat. The restaurant's version, he points out, features only USDA Prime cuts of beef.

"I wanted it not to be a cheap skirt steak," he told the Daily News. "I wanted it to be a cut above."

And while the $100,000 price tag may seem a bit stiff, it does come with a designer goody bag filled with filet mignon, chocolate sauce, Kobe burgers and candy corn. Plus, as Sherry pointed out, there are added bonuses to wearing 85 pounds of beef.

"Wear it for an hour, have fun with it," he suggested. "Then you might have enough meat for six months for your freezer ... so that the $100,000 is not that expensive."

And, much like Gaga's meat dress, early reviews of the Old Homestead gown were also mixed: Mery Lopez, a waitress at the 142-year-old steakhouse who modeled the getup for the Daily News, described it as "heavy and greasy and gross," adding, "it is what it is — but I like it."

Where do we sign up?

Ke$ha's Cannibal Track List: No Drake, Plenty Of Dirty Puns

'Animal' remix and eight new songs feature production by Max Martin, Benny Blanco and Bangladesh.
By James Montgomery

Ke$ha

On November 22, Ke$ha will return with Cannibal, the mini-LP/ maxi-EP "companion" piece to her platinum-plus debut disc, Animal.

Much like Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster, Cannibal will be sold both as a standalone album and as part of a deluxe reissue of Animal. According to a press release from Ke$ha's label, RCA, there are eight new songs on the album (including smash first single "We R Who We R") — produced by the likes of Max Martin, Benny Blanco and Bangladesh — and a new remix.

Earlier this week, a rumored track list for Cannibal began making the rounds, featuring songs like "Rumblin'," "Glitter and Glamour" and "Strong," a supposed team-up with Drake. It sounded rather promising, but, unfortunately, it was also untrue.

On Thursday (October 28), RCA sent MTV News the actual track listing for Cannibal, and while it doesn't feature any cameos by Drake (or anyone else), there is a song called — ahem — "C U Next Tuesday," which promises to be a rather interesting listen.

Other tracks include "Sleazy," "Blow," "The Harold Song" (perhaps a spiritual sequel of sorts to the Animal track "Stephen"?) and the pun-a-riffic "Grow a Pear."

In an interview earlier this month with Entertainment Weekly, Ke$ha said she aimed to create "[a] youthful and irreverent movement of the kids" with Cannibal, and describes the music on the disc as good, positive and "fun as sh--." And judging by the song titles alone, we're inclined to believe her.

The track list for Ke$ha's Cannibal, according to RCA Records:
» 1. "Cannibal"
» 2. "We R Who We R"
» 3. "Sleazy"
» 4. "Blow"
» 5. "The Harold Song"
» 6. "Crazy Beautiful Life"
» 7. "Grow a Pear"
» 8. "C U Next Tuesday"
» 9. "Animal (Billboard remix)"

Will you be picking up Cannibal? Tell us in the comments!

Lady Gaga, Elton John Record Duet For 'Gnomeo & Juliet'

'Hello, Hello' will appear on the animated Disney film's soundtrack, reports 'Entertainment Weekly.'
By Gil Kaufman

Elton John and Lady Gaga have been carrying on a torrid mutual-admiration affair for much of the past year. The two pop icons have shared the stage several times and often have spoken highly of each other, but now they're ready to take it to the next level.

According to "Entertainment Weekly," the dynamic piano duo are planning on releasing a duet called "Hello, Hello" on the soundtrack to the forthcoming animated Disney film "Gnomeo & Juliet." The magazine describes the tune as "a charming pop track," and reports that it will be heard when the movie's two lead characters — lawn ornaments voiced by James McAvoy and Emily Blunt, respectively — first meet.

"Gnomeo & Juliet," produced by Sir Elton and his longtime partner, David Furnish, is slated to premiere on February 11, 2011.

While John has hinted that he'd love to appear on Gaga's upcoming Born This Way album, even if he doesn't, he's already given it his glittering stamp of approval.

"I've already heard [Gaga's new album], so I think it's more or less done," he told "EW" earlier this month. "Her record — it's f---ing amazing." He added that he was particularly enamored with one tune, saying, " 'Born This Way,' which is the title song, will completely get rid of Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive.' This is the new 'I Will Survive.' That was the gay anthem. This is the new gay anthem. Actually, it's not a gay anthem — it can apply to anybody."

While John is an old hand at movie soundtracks — including his Oscar-winning work on "The Lion King," as well as music for "The Road to El Dorado" — the "Gnomeo" song will be Gaga's first original contribution to a film.

Are you excited about Lady Gaga and Elton John's upcoming collaboration? Tell us in the comments.

'Grey's Anatomy' Recap: The Show Within a Show

It's been nearly six months since the shooting, so a documentary film crew comes to make a special on how the hospital and the doctors who were working that fateful day are doing. The entire episode is seen as if we're watching the creatively-named Seattle Medical documentary special. They of course just happened to be there filming at the same time that there was a groundbreaking surgery happening: Derek, Mark, Owen and Callie are doing a double arm transplant.

As Callie and Lexie are tending to the donor, they realize that there's potential disaster in the form of a small tattoo on one of the guy's forearms. But the recipient and his wife have no problem with it -- they want to do everything they can to help make this work -- and so the surgery goes on.

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.
By Gil Kaufman

Adam Lambert performs "Whole Lotta Love" on "American Idol" on Tuesday
Photo: R. Mickshaw/Getty Images/ Fox

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin's 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."

That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.

The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon.

For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997.

Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction.

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Ke$ha Goes 'Hard' On New Single, 'We R Who We R'

Singer keeps the party going with first single from Cannibal.
By Jocelyn Vena

Ke$ha
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

Ke$ha has found a chart-topping formula — combine killer beats with lyrics about super-fun parties and hot pants. And her latest single, "We R Who We R," certainly fits that mold.

The track, the first single off her November 22 release Cannibal, hit the Internet on Thursday (October 14). It's another uber-fun tune about how awesome it is to dance the night away, with Ke$ha singing on the chorus: "Tonight we're going hard/ Just like the world is ours/ We're tearing it apart/ You know we're superstars/ we are who we are."

While the song doesn't veer much from prior club bangers like "Tik Tok" and "Take It Off," the singer admits that "We R" is in part inspired by the recent rash of suicides among gay youth. "I wanted to inspire people to be themselves," she told EW.com. "It's a celebration of any sort of quirks or eccentricities."

In January, Ke$ha released her debut album Animal and it went straight to the top of the charts. Cannibal — a nine-song set that features collaborations with Max Martin, Benny Blanco and Bangladesh — is set to be released both on its own and as a bundle with Animal.

"I don't want to go away!" she said. "I feel like I'm creating this hopefully very youthful and irreverent movement of the kids, of, like, adolescence. I feel like the parents don't get it, but the kids get it. And they deserve to have more good, positive music ... It's fun as sh--! So I wanted to give [my fans] that."

The Seventeen cover girl also tweeted a message to her fans about the tune: "WE R WHO WE R! on the radio today you guys like??? dancin liiiiike were dumbbbb we be forever younggggg."

Britney Spears Tweets About 'Glee' Tribute Episode

'I loved it!' writes the pop star, who also thanked fans and shared her thoughts on the show's covers.
By James Dinh

Britney Spears and Heather Morris on the set of "Glee"
Photo: FOX

Britney Spears fans are a force to be reckoned with. Earlier this year, they campaigned for an episode of "Glee" to be dedicated solely to their favorite pop princess. And after much anticipation, on Tuesday night the students of McKinley High shimmied, crooned and danced their way in tribute to the entertainer. The singer took to Twitter to thank her fans for their efforts and shared her thoughts on the program, titled "Britney/Brittany," and its covers of her songs.

"I loved it! Thank you guys SO much for making this happen!" Britney tweeted. In particular, the star seemed to enjoy the renditions of her classic tunes, saying, "I love this version of Stronger. Artie did a great job," and "The GLEE version of Toxic is amazing!"

While some of the McKinley High students — including Cheerio cheerleader Brittany S. Pearce (played by Heather Morris) — went into anesthesia--induced dream sequences to channel their inner Britney, Spears herself emerged throughout the episode's hallucinogenic fantasies. Appearing as Madonna's character at the end of "Me Against the Music," a high-school teacher in "... Baby One More Time" and a fellow cheerleader, the singer remained a source of inspiration for the Gleekers.

Spears gave kudos to co-star Morris, saying, "Awww Heather Morris is sooo cute! Brittany S Pearce. Ha! She was so fun to work with and was really sweet in person."

The singer not only applauded Morris' friendliness, but also her rendition of "I'm a Slave 4 U." She wrote of the sultry production, "Slave: Oh ... My ... God ...! Those little boys are SO cute! I know how hard it is to dance with that snake! Nice job." The pop star also was surprised at how well the show re-created the music video set of her 2003 Madonna duet, "Me Against the Music," pointing out that it "looks just like the original," and adding, "Santana does a great Madonna impression."

As the students walked Spears through memory lane, Lea Michele's cover of "... Baby One More Time" also had the singer reminiscing. "Watching Baby brings back so many memories! Feels like yesterday," she explained.

John Stamos also made a guest appearance in the episode, as the dentist who sends the Gleeks into Britney world. Spears made it clear that the 47-year-old actor looks as good as he did during his heyday. "John Stamos is still hot! He looks the same as he did on Full House," she tweeted.

As with many "Glee" fans, Britney found a pleasantly odd interest in Jane Lynch, who plays the aggressive cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, describing the actress as "hilarious and scary all rolled into one."

Spears wasn't the only one who enjoyed filming the tribute episode — the "Glee" castmembers recently dished on working with the star. Morris told Australian magazine TV Week that the singer was her childhood inspiration. "She was my idol from, like, age 12 to 16," she said. "I sang to her [songs] in my living room and danced to her — I learned all her moves. And I had my talent shows and I lip-synched to her. I just kept flashing back to growing up and being obsessed with her."

Naya Rivera, who plays Santana, also spoke highly of the pop icon. "I love Britney Spears. I mean, who doesn't? We all grew up with her," she proclaimed in a promo video for the show. "The first music purchase I ever made was '... Baby One More Time' on cassette. [It was like], 'Britney Spears is going to be in my mitts, what do I do?' [And I was like], 'Hi Britney!' And then she was like, 'Hey!' She was awesome and beautiful. She was, like, magical."

What did you think of the Britney-themed episode? Sound off in the comments!

Michael Jackson 'Thriller' Movie In The Works

MJ choreographer and 'This Is It' director Kenny Ortega rumored to be helming the big-screen adaptation.
By Gil Kaufman

Michael Jackson in "Thriller"
Photo: Epic Records

Just in time for Halloween comes a report that former Michael Jackson choreographer Kenny Ortega is in talks to direct a big-screen version of "Thriller," the late pop star's groundbreaking music video.

According to a report on Deadline Hollywood, GK Films, the production company from Academy Award-winning producer Graham King ("The Tourist," "The Rum Diary"), is in "active" negotiations to put together a deal to bring the landmark 1983 mini-movie to the big screen. "This Is It" and "High School Musical" director Ortega is attached to direct the $50 million project with a script from "The Hangover" screenwriter Jeremy Garelick.

The project hinges on an OK from the Jackson estate, and a spokesperson for the estate said no confirmation was currently available on the project; representatives for Garelick, Ortega and GK had not returned requests for comment at press time.

The original 14-minute clip was directed by veteran filmmaker John Landis ("Trading Places," "The Blues Brothers"), who is currently involved in a royalties dispute with the Jackson estate over proceeds from the best-selling video of all time. "Thriller" set a new high-water mark for the art of video-making at the time and is still widely considered to be among the greatest efforts ever in the medium, one that continues to influence generations of artists.

The latest to take a swing at "Thriller" is Kanye West, who has said his 35-minute art film "Runaway" drew inspiration from the video, including a nod to MJ in a scene featuring a giant papier-mâché likeness of the King of Pop.

No details were available about the plot, but Deadline reported that it might follow the ghouly song's "folklore" and possibly include a story line involving the late narrator of the song, film actor Vincent Price, and the town in which he grew up.

As noted on MTV's Movies Blog, a "Thriller" movie helmed by Ortega wouldn't be entirely surprising. Though Ortega has roots in music-based projects and is best known as a choreographer ("Dirty Dancing," "Newsies"), his directing credits include the Halloween-themed 1993 witch tale "Hocus Pocus," starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and a young Thora Birch.

What do you think of plans to make the "Thriller" video into a movie? Tell us in the comments!

The albums featured in the new series are the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, Led Zeppelin's IV, David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, The Clash's London Calling, New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies, Primal Scream's Screamadelica, Pink Floyd's The Division Bell, Blur's Parklife and — the most recent album on to make the cut — Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Meant to honor "the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people's lives," the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page — who helped design the cover for IV — was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album's iconic imagery.

"Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him," he said. "That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time."

Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their Rush of Blood stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan "a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today's issue date."

"We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps," the message read. "Very nice they are too."

Rihanna's Loud Preview: Eminem Gets Dark On Otherwise Light LP

Rihanna tells her side of the story on 'Love the Way You Lie (Part II),' one of six new tracks MTV News heard.

Forget the morose tone of Rihanna's Rated R; her album Loud, due November 10, certainly lives up to its name. A mixture of soft ballads, island party anthems and empowering love songs, Loud may go down as Rihanna's best album yet.

When MTV News got an early listen of the album, we were treated to six unreleased songs, including Rihanna's duet with Eminem, "Love the Way You Lie (Part II)," a sequel to their smash single released earlier this year. On the song, Rihanna tells her part of the story. The song opens with just her voice and the piano as she sings, "On the first page of our story, the future seemed so bright/ Then this thing turned so evil."

When the chorus kicks in, the hook from the original track is bigger and more cinematic than ever before, but it's Em's seething anger when he delivers his verse that will have fans going bananas. He raps about the pain she causes him just as much as he causes her, spitting rhymes about trading punches with his lady love.

While "Lie (Part II)" is dark, much of the album is about love and partying. On the Stargate-produced "S&M," there's no innuendo when Rihanna sings over a booming beat lyrics like "Sticks and stones may break my bones/ But chains and whips excite me."

"Cheers" is a party anthem featuring an Avril Lavigne sample from her 2003 song "I'm With You," but Rihanna turns the ballad on its head with an island-flavored beat.

Going further into embracing her island roots, Rihanna touches on ska and reggae for her song "Man Down," complete with police sirens and playful synths while singing about shooting a man.

However, Rihanna falls in love on the album too, as evidenced by tracks like "What's My Name?" (She recently shot a scene with Drake for the video. A photo was leaked from the shoot showing the two sharing a laugh while lounging on the couch.)

On "Complicated," Rihanna sings about her playful relationship with her boyfriend. It's airy and has a house-music vibe. She displays her singing chops on the song, belting out lines like "You're not easy to love" and "Everything with you is so complicated." The song is synthy, funky, flirty and bouncy, especially when the beat kicks in midway through.

"California King (Bed)" is a return to power-pop ballads for the singer. She sounds lovely on the breakup track, showing her soft side with lines like, "Chest to chest, nose to nose, palm to palm, we was always just that close," but as it turns out, the pair have certainly grown apart.

Which song are you most looking forward to on the album? Let us know in the comments!

You Can Do It! (Okay, Maybe Not)

The world's worst band is playing at a neighborhood fest/farmer's market one block from my apartment, but they're so loud that it sounds like they're playing right outside my window. I just ventured out so I could see what they look like and take a picture to show you, but as it turns out they're a group of down-on-their-luck teenagers playing plastic buckets and ginormous metal bazookas (which looks like trombones but aren't), so I felt bad and didn't do so.

But you know, this leads me to something. You want to encourage these kids and be like, "Keep playing your music! You can do it!" But at what point do you tell them they're awful? I mean, the neighborhood is suffering because of the noise. I have my TV turned up all the way to drown them out.

It reminds me of when I played the flute in the fourth grade school band. I thought we were amazing but then we had a concert. Afterward, when I asked my step-dad how we were, he laughed and said, "You sounded like the Charlie Brown school band." I was eight or nine years old at the time, but I was old enough to be told I sucked. I remember not caring. These kids are teenagers... I think it's time someone encouraged them to find another career path because this jam-band thing isn't working out.

(Btw, I couldn't find a clip of the Peanuts gang school band to show you, but you know what I'm talking about, right? They were horrible.)

Mel Gibson Denied Access to Daughter on Birthday

Mel Gibson won't be able to spend a second with his baby girl Lucia tomorrow on her first birthday, after being shut down by the judge in their custody case.

The actor gets Lucia today but is supposed to return her to Oksana Grigorieva in the afternoon. The issue is that Mel's primary nanny is out sick this morning.

As such, Mel asked the judge for permission to return Lucia Saturday. No dice.

Oksana and Mel Pic

Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva are in an all-out war over custody.

Team Oksana objected, arguing Mel has another nanny who is perfectly capable of transporting Lucia. She already feels Mel already has too much visitation.

In the end, the judge kept the status quo, which means Mel must return Lucia this evening. He's testifying Monday in their case. All we're wondering here is ...

Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her 'Crazy' Led Zeppelin Covers

'I've listened to their music since I was a child,' says the R&B diva, who recorded 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love.'

Alicia Keys has proven to be as selfless in real life as she is in song.

The singer held her 8th annual Keep a Child Alive Black Ball event in New York on Thursday night. The fundraiser brought out Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Usher, Jay Sean, Janelle Monae, Jennifer Hudson, Whitney Houston and more.

Jay-Z and Keys' husband, Swizz Beatz, performed "On to the Next One," and Jay later performed "Empire State of Mind." Monae also hit the stage, as did Keys and Sade, who performed a duet, "Love Is Stronger Than Pride."

"It's my heart and soul," Keys told MTV News about the organization she co-founded. "Since the beginning, we've been very driven to do incredible work. I'm proud to show what four to five women who are very dedicated can do."

The organization benefits children and families who have been affected by AIDS but can't afford to purchase medicine; the event reportedly helped raise $2.4 million.

This year, Keep a Child Alive introduced the "Buy Life" T-shirt. The shirt features a large barcode on the garment; donors can buy the shirt and scan the code with their smart phones to make a donation to the charity. Every time the code is scanned by a phone, a donation goes through. Ryan Seacrest, Kim Kardashian and Katie Holmes are among the celebrity spokespeople appearing in ads for the shirt.

"It's like a dream to me to be among these people singing and performing, and opening people's eyes to what Keep a Child Alive can do," Keys said.

Taylor Swift's Speak Now Could Have 2010's Biggest Debut Sales

Experts predict that the singer's new album could sell 800,000 or more copies in its first week.
By Gil Kaufman

There's no doubt that Taylor Swift is on a roll. From the pile of four-star reviews for her just-released third studio album, Speak Now, to the intense interest in the stories behind the songs, the 20-year-old singer is poised to cement her status as one of the biggest young career stars in all of music.

And next Wednesday could provide the icing on the cake. According to industry experts, Swift is on track to easily notch the biggest first-week sales of the year, and possibly even approach one of music's most elusive achievements: a platinum-selling debut week.

"I've been very specific on my point of view from the beginning," said Scott Borchetta, president and CEO of Swift's label, Big Machine Label Group. "We shipped 2 million copies this week and we always felt we could do 700,000 to a million." Late Wednesday, Borchetta said that sales for the week were trending "way north" of 700,000 and depending on how the rest of the week goes, "who knows?"

Either way, he was confident that Speak Now would sell a lot of copies.

Billboard has predicted that Speak Now could sell as many as 800,000-900,000 copies in the week following its release, easily besting the year's biggest bow to date, Eminem's Recovery, which moved 741,000.

"Expectations are high, very high," said Keith Caulfield, senior chart manager and analyst at Billboard, on Wednesday. "Let's say even though 1 million is possible, even if she doesn't get that, it will probably sell 800,000 or more, which will give her the give biggest single sales week for an album this year ... or last." Caulfield said the experts Billboard has spoken to are bullish on Swift's prospects, and they have good reason to be.

"It speaks volumes about how big a star she is and how she can get people engaged by not just buying a single track or concert ticket, but getting consumers to buy a whole album," he explained. "Considering how many albums she's sold and the story she's built and the career she's had over the past couple of years with her first two albums, it seems like the appropriate reaction."

Borchetta said the potentially gaudy numbers are a function of both a very careful, thoughtful marketing plan from his label and, more importantly, the strong connection between Swift and her fans. "It's about the songs for her and Taylor has taught millions of young people to go out and buy CDs," something that is a rarity in this day of easily accessible downloads from albums often larded with a few gems amid so much chaff. "Taylor doesn't write throwaways."

As proof, he noted that earlier this week she had nine of the top 10 singles on iTunes' country chart. Despite the seemingly risky prospect of flooding the market with more than 2 million CDs, he's not worried about returns. "Smile and wave," he said proudly. "They're gone. We're already getting re-orders." And though iTunes does not reveal sales data, Swift also seems on track to set some new high-water marks on Apple's digital service; at midweek all 14 songs from the album were on iTunes' top 200 singles list, including 10 in the top 30.

While some artists have come off recent best-selling albums to find soft sales for follow-ups, Caulfield said Swift seems destined to buck that trend because of the way she connects with listeners. "She's able to engage people in a way that's different than most other artists," he noted of Swift, who has created a unique lane with her confessional songwriting and willingness to share her private emotions with her millions of fans. "People feel that she's speaking from the heart and making a very personal statement. The songs come from her heart and [talk] about her feelings. You feel like you have more of a connection with her than other artists."

Another unique aspect he pointed to was her youth and ability to straddle both the country and pop worlds by appealing to fans who love Britney Spears and who used to follow Shania Twain, but who also enjoy contemporary country stars like Carrie Underwood. Add in super catchy songs and the Big Machine label's strategy of getting Speak Now into everywhere from big-box stores and mom-and-pop shops to Hot Topic, Starbucks and maybe even your local 7-Eleven, and the picture starts to come into clear view.

Now, about that 1 million number.

No album has reached that plateau since Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III sold 1,006,000 copies during its first week on shelves back in 2008, and one industry person who doesn't work for Swift's label told Caulfield that selling a million copies of an album in a week in 2010 is the equivalent of selling 2.3 million back in 2000. That magic number, the highest first-week tally in the chart's history, was put up by 'NSYNC's No Strings Attached in 2000.

Swift's last album, Fearless, debuted at #1 in November 2008 with sales of 582,000, going on to move 6 million copies and take the crown for the top seller of 2009.

At the end of the day, though, Borchetta stressed that Swift is not the kind of artist who is obsessed with reading SoundScan sales reports. "She's certainly aware of those things, but she doesn't put it in the perspective of having to beat another artist," he said. "She loves it when she's successful and is still just as excitable as ever, but when a fan quotes a lyric back to her she just loves it. For her, it's about her songwriting."

Coldplay, Led Zeppelin Album Covers Featured On New British Stamps

On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.'s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.

Justin Bieber Announces Acoustic Album Release Date

Pop star tweets new LP will drop November 23.

Justin Bieber fans are just a month away from checking out a new acoustic album from the teen sensation.

Last week, the Canadian pop phenomenon tweeted about releasing a collection of acoustic tracks in time for the holidays, and on Saturday he announced the record will hit shelves in November.

"On November 23rd the Unplugged Acoustic album comes out!" Bieber tweeted. "Taking it back to how we started. Spread the word."

The megastar crooner has previously hinted that the record will include toned-down versions of album cuts from My World and My World 2.0, as well as a freshly recorded track Bieber knocked out in Hawaii. The singer's musical director and guitarist, Dan Kanter, has mentioned the album has a global feel. "Loving the percussion... Cajones and congas!" Kanter tweeted. "Definitely an influence from our travels around the world!"

In addition to releasing a suite of mellowed-out tracks, Bieber also dished in September that he's working on a follow-up to My World 2.0 slated to drop near the end of next year. The untitled album will also include a contribution from fellow Canadian hitmaker, Drake.

"[It'll] probably [come out] fourth quarter next year," Bieber said while working the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards red carpet. "Drake is gonna be on that album; I'm not sure [who else]. I'm gonna ask him if he can get [Lil] Wayne on there."

2011 is shaping up to busy year for the Biebs. While he's aiming to drop more new music next fall, his 3-D movie, "Never Say Never," will hit theaters in February. "Never" director Jon Chu explained to MTV News in August that the flick is "gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from."

"It's a really fascinating story and it has a lot to do with our sort of digital lifestyle now," Chu said of the film's arc. "He was able to do what corporations try to do now when they use YouTube and they don't even know what to do with it yet. It's a pretty cool story for our time."

Are you excited for Justin Bieber's new acoustic album? Let us know in the comments!
